All of us need support from others to overcome difficult situations. Sometimes, it’s to just get up on a Monday morning.
All of us need support from others to overcome difficult situations. Sometimes, it’s to just get up on a Monday morning.
This week started like no other. With temperatures flirting around zero degrees, all I wanted to do was bury myself deeper into the comforts of my bed. But that was not the case.
Go hiking!
There are high expectations to follow ‘her path’ set 30-odd years ago when we married, but I did not see this one coming on a Monday morning.
Part of my mind has become mummified around the gentle nudges toward ‘recommended actions in life.’ The recommended action is something every cell in my body rebels but is powerless to even grumble.
Every weekend, since covid, it’s been the same story. One fallout from the pandemic that leaves me breathless is hiking. Rain, shine, snow, ice … this regimen of weekend hikes has grown roots in my psyche that puts the sturdiest of weeds to shame.
My loving wife discovered the true beauty of nature by setting foot into its unconditional embrace. She slowly ramped up the walks to span hours and rougher terrains. When she ran out of space in the 10 km radius around our house, she started plotting long drives to hike. Canada, the second largest country, willingly hosts her fancy footwork.
Bear-infested national parks, solid ice lakes and waterfalls, knee-deep snow, marshy land, and lack of network coverage for navigational backup are all mild challenges. And I will be hauling my battered soul and bruised knees right behind. The unspoken threat of getting my daily rations curtailed kept me going.
When the last weekend went by with no plan, I rejoiced at my freedom. But Miss Nature had other plans. To avoid the crowds this week, she switched the hike to a Monday.
Although a bit cold when we set out, it was a beautiful Fall/Autumn day. Niagara Falls is about a two-hour drive. Endless trails along the river, the rush of waters falling from Niagara Falls, the gentle breeze showering colourful leaves in your path … the natural beauty took my breath away. The strenuous climb further tested my lung capacity.
But I enjoyed every bit of the hike, as I do all other walks. I have to get over the idea of venturing out into the woods. But then, to help me, I have one other resident expert besides my conscience.
I took the opportunity to record my pitch as well. What better backdrop (see video).
I entered the world of freelancing recently and am constantly fine-tuning my approach to network and generate leads to see what works. Any recommendations and feedback are welcome.
